How Long Do Dental Bridges Last

A dental bridge is a resolution for those missing multiple adjacent teeth. It fills the gaps between teeth, offering high functionality and enhanced aesthetics. However, this investment in one’s smile doesn’t last forever.

Just how long do dental bridges last? Let’s find out.

Importance of a Dental Bridge

Each tooth in your mouth relies on the teeth around it for support. Unfortunately, when one falls out, this support dissipates. Teeth can slowly begin to move out of position, leading to crooked teeth, overcrowded areas, misaligned bites, and more.

To maintain your oral health, you will want to replace any missing teeth as soon as possible. This is where dental bridges shine. They can recreate the support for surrounding teeth while also giving the patient functional, natural-appearing replacements.

Without taking this step, you may find yourself dealing with more complex dental issues down the road.

How Long Do Dental Bridges Last?

The lifespan of dental bridges will depend highly on the type of dental bridges you have. For instance, an implant-supported bridge is highly durable and long-lasting and can typically last for 10 to 15 years. However, with great care, it may last 20 or more years.

With dental implants, the implant itself is fused with the jaw bone and is intended to remain there for a lifetime. This means that the only thing that would need to be replaced would be the dental crown or artificial tooth portion.

Traditional dental bridges are also strong and highly functional. On average, they last about 10 years. With great care, though, they, too, can last much longer.

Boost the Lifespan of Your Dental Bridges

While there are many factors that play a role in just how long your dental bridges will last, your level of oral hygiene is a key factor. This means making sure that you brush your teeth at least twice every day, though brushing after every time you eat will amplify your efforts.

Flossing daily is something else that contributes to a dental bridge’s longevity. It will keep any bacteria and unwanted debris away from the gumline and between your teeth. This, of course, can be done more than once. Even rinsing the mouth with water after eating can aid in keeping it clean and clear.

Always visit your dentist every 6 months for a professional cleaning. This will not only keep your teeth clean and free of buildup, but it will also give your dentist the opportunity to do an examination to make sure there are no areas of concern - including with your dental bridge. If there are, these issues can be spotted early and handled with ease before they become a bigger problem.

Finally, you want to watch what you eat (such as hard foods) and avoid teeth grinding. Both can put your dental bridge in jeopardy - and lead to increased wear and tear.
